TURKEY’S BOY SWEAT AGAINST ALMIGHTY GERALD

 09 during the opening of Tuks Youth Wrestling in Pretoria, Hatfield.

 

 

 

 

Gerald Chauke (17), from block T in Soshanguve gave Athur Eginc a tough welcoming fight at Tuks Sports Centre, Pretoria. The young man looked nervous when they announced that he’ll be wrestling with one of the Yaman’s wrestlers on Cadets mat 6, Athur. “Yes I was nervous but I had a good feeling about the fight because my first match in mat 5, I won it within two minutes”, he said.

Following the first simple win, Chauke received devastated tackles from Athur which resulted in the match ending up with 5-3 points win. The centre started to get more and hotter when Yaman wrestlers shouted “hold him Athur, hold him”. Chauke didn’t hesitate and suddenly he made the temperature low by pulling Egnic head down.

Chauke’s coach, Thabiso Molemo said “the tournament is a good start for the wrestlers to acquire their skills and be able to face fast, and active fighters”. “It all started here at Tuks because it’s the home of Sports in Pretoria”. Many wrestlers got opportunities to face tougher wrestlers from different weights.

YOUNG WOMAN ON THE MOVE

These days’ women are capable of reaching greater heights, twenty one year old Unene Manganyi from Pretoria West has achieved a lot at a young age. She is studying her Masters in Electronic engineering with French South African Institute (FSATI), which is working together with the Tshwane University of Technology.

 Manganyi got a bursary to study with the institution through French embassy for two years. For one year she had been working she will spend the seven months doing a research. She will be leaving on the 4 November to pursue her studies and she will be back on end of June 2013. Her family has been a pillar of strength in her life

“My family has been a big support system through my achievements and university supported me by availing opportunities to me” she said.

 Besides achieving a lot academically she had a chance to represent the country in various conferences abroad. In 2006 while in grade 11 she was chosen to represent the country in International summer school of young Physics in Canada. With her courage and determination, this year she went to G20 conference in Washington DC, USA as Minister of Youth and Environmental Affairs.

Manganyi said that as a person she is self motivated and does not draw inspiration from people outside. Manganyi can be an inspiration to young people who aim to be successful. On her return she would like to work for year before continuing with her PhD.

Local Choir set for London

 Seun and the Holy rock choir from Block L, Soshanguve will be leaving the country for London on 26 August. With one year and three months in their existence and three albums under their belt the future looks bright.

The choir was formed the previous year, it sing’s clap and tap dance  music, it comprised of eighty members from the township. The choristers will perform in four cities, London, Coventry, Leeds and Manchester in a conference organised by Coventry Faith Mission Church.Their trip is funded by British embassy.

The founder of the choir Seun Nkosi age (35) a traffic officer, who is originally from a Christian family in Soweto said the reason he started the choir is that he is passionate about God “I like singing and draw lot of strength from God. My father who was a pastor also played a huge role in my life to be where I am today” Nkosi said

Some of the choristers used to be involved in crime and substance abuse but they have repented. One of the group members Selina Mokgotlane is happy that she will be flying to foregn country for the first time in her life “Really I’m more than happy that I will go to London this month”

The group is willing to raise the country flag high during the tour.

Children enjoy fun day

Family South Africa (FAMSA) is an organisation that aims to empower the youth with life skills, keeping them away from alcohol and drug abuse had a fun day in Soshanguve, Block T.

The organisation has offices in Mamelodi, Pretoria, Soshanguve and operates in informal settlements.

The children who were mostly under 21, were divided into four groups to play different games such as netball and soccer.

Playing in their clothes without sports kits did not demoralised them to have fun.

 The organiser of the project Petro Theron said she was delighted with the number of children who participated. Petro was satisfied with the work the organisation has achieved. “Since the past eight years we have done well, children do want to come each and every Saturday of the Month” she said.

The number of children taking part in the organisation is between 40 and 60.

There were Students from The University of Pretoria who came and motivated children about the careers of their choice.

Kgabo Sephesu, a fourth year engineering student said, they did not see the project as an ordinary one but saw it as brother and sister relationship with children. “The main idea is to lead them to their future careers and spend time with them” he said.

Police are hard on crime

 Mabopane SAPS had a significant success in fighting crime, their operations in the area led to several arrests.

Fourteen people in possession of dagga were arrested, assault with intend to grievous bodily harm were nine, road traffic offenders were fifteen, business robbery five, drunken driving three, theft six and house breaking five.

According to the station spokesperson Lieutenant Dikatso Thebe the numbers are low compared to previous months. “if we can always get help from community policing forums and street patrollers we can fight the crime” Thebe said. She also emphasized that community members should not have fear to report any criminal activities they encounter. The Station is planning to hold different awareness campaigns very soon. It will   involve parents and children, to highlight different social ills such as alcohol abuse among the youth and abandoning of infants.

Samaritan helps disabled woman

A disabled woman from Soshanguve block H, Flora Maluleka received a brand new wheel chair from Wilson Tladi of Mogole productions.

He discovered Maluleka’s problem while he was doing a story about her waterlogged yard which caused cracks on her house on  April this year. He made a promise to help with a wheel chair because the old one she had its brakes were not functioning. He said he approached  the department of Social Welfare and development, the department gave him incomplete wheel chair which had no back wheels. Soshanguve disability centre donated him the back wheels. “I’m really happy that i could help other people and also journalists should help not just write the stories only” He said.

 When asked about how she felt about her new gift on Nelson Mandela day Maluleka said “i appreciate the efforts Tladi made to help me with a new wheel chair, it’s almost a year without a good wheel chair, may God bless him” she said. Her daughter Kedibone Maluleka was happy for her mother. “my mother would be able to visit her friends she has been confined to bed the whole year not knowing what to do but she will leave the bed from now” she said. The family said Tladi should continue with his good work and not end with them.
